CNC Machining Cost Per Hour: Typical Shop Rates and How They Work

By Phil Huang, Elite Mold Tech. Updated November 1, 2026.

CNC machining cost per hour depends mostly on the machine. Published 2026 guides put US 3-axis milling at about $35 to $60 per hour, 4-axis at $60 to $90, and 5-axis at $100 to $200. Guides for Chinese shops list lower ranges. These are market estimates, not quotes, and the hourly rate is only one line of the final price.

This guide shows the published ranges with their sources, explains what a rate includes, and shows how to turn an hourly rate into a price per part.

Key takeaways

  • The hourly rate rises with machine capability: 3-axis is lowest, 5-axis is highest.
  • Published ranges differ by region, and they are estimates from vendor guides, not firm quotes.
  • Machine time is only part of the price. Setup, material, tooling, finishing, and inspection are separate.
  • A lower hourly rate does not always mean a lower price. A faster machine at a higher rate can finish the part sooner.
  • The most reliable number is a quote based on your drawing.

How much does CNC machining cost per hour?

Most shops charge between about $20 and $200 per hour, depending on machine type and region. A basic 3-axis mill sits at the low end. A 5-axis machining center sits at the high end. The exact rate depends on the machine, the shop’s overhead, and the labor behind it.

Two published 2026 guides give these reference ranges:

Machine type

US range (USD per hour)

China range (USD per hour)

3-axis milling

35 to 60

20 to 60

4-axis milling

30 to 80

5-axis milling

100 to 200

60 to 140

CNC turning (lathe)

50 to 100

18 to 50

Sources: Fabcon, “CNC Machining Hourly Rates 2026” (US, updated 2026); Haizol, “CNC Machining Cost in China” (China, August 2026). Both are vendor guides and give reference ranges, not verified quotes. Another US source in the Fabcon article puts 5-axis at $75 to $300, so ranges vary widely by machine class.

Use the table to see the pattern, not to budget a job. A part’s real cost also depends on its design, material, and quantity. Elite Mold Tech does not publish an hourly rate, because the right price comes from your drawing.

Why does 5-axis cost more per hour than 3-axis?

A 5-axis machine costs more to buy, to program, and to run. It moves the part and the tool on five axes at once, so it reaches complex shapes in one setup. The higher rate pays for that capability. For the right part, it still lowers the total price.

  • Machine cost. 5-axis centers cost much more than 3-axis mills.
  • Programming. Complex tool paths need skilled programmers and software.
  • Operator skill. Setup and checks need experienced staff.

The trade-off is fewer setups and less handling. See our 5-axis CNC machining  service for the parts it suits.

What does an hourly rate include?

An hourly rate usually covers machine time only. It reflects the machine, its upkeep, power, shop space, and the operator. Setup, programming, material, tooling, finishing, inspection, and shipping are usually listed on separate lines. Always ask a shop what its rate includes.

Shops differ in how they quote. Some give one all-in price per part. Others show machine time and extras separately. The all-in price is easier to compare, so ask each shop for the same format.

What factors change the hourly rate?

Five factors move the rate up or down. Knowing them helps you read any quote.

  1. Machine type and age. Newer, faster, more capable machines cost more per hour.
  2. Region and labor cost. Rates reflect local wages and overhead.
  3. Certification level. Shops with audited quality systems often charge more.
  4. Material. Hard metals slow the cut and wear tools, which raises time and cost. Aluminum cuts fast.
  5. Order size. Setup is spread across more parts on larger runs.

Aluminum is one of the cheapest metals to machine per hour of cutting, because it removes material quickly. See our aluminum CNC machining  page for details.

How do you turn an hourly rate into a price per part?

Multiply the machine time per part by the hourly rate, then add setup, material, tooling, finishing, and inspection. Setup is a one-time cost, so divide it by the number of parts. The formula below shows the full picture.

Price per part = (machine hours × hourly rate) + material + tooling + finishing + inspection + (setup ÷ quantity) + margin and freight.

Here is a simple, hypothetical example of the machine-time line only. A part needs 0.5 machine hours, and the shop rate is $60 per hour. The machine-time cost is 0.5 × $60 = $30 per part. This number is an illustration, not a quote from Elite Mold Tech. Every other line is added on top.

Nosso guia sobre aluminum CNC machining cost  walks through each line of the price.

Is a lower hourly rate always cheaper?

No. A low hourly rate on a slow machine can cost more than a higher rate on a fast one. The part price depends on how many hours the part needs, not only on the rate for each hour. Compare total price per part, not hourly rate.

Consider two shops. Shop A charges a low rate but needs four setups on an older 3-axis machine. Shop B charges a higher rate and cuts the part in one setup on a 5-axis machine. Shop B can be cheaper overall, and the part is usually more accurate because it is handled less.

How can you lower your machining cost per hour?

You cannot change a shop’s rate, but you can reduce the hours the part needs. Every minute removed from the cycle lowers the price.

  1. Simplify the design. Avoid deep pockets and sharp inside corners.
  2. Loosen tolerances on features that do not mate.
  3. Choose an easy-to-cut alloy, such as 6061-T6.
  4. Order more at once to spread setup across parts.
  5. Send a full package, with a 3D file and a 2D drawing.

For one-off parts, see our prototipagem  service. For larger runs, see production machining.

How does material change the cost of an hour?

Material does not change the shop rate, but it changes how many hours the part needs. Aluminum removes quickly, so a part takes fewer machine minutes. Steel, stainless steel, and titanium cut slower and wear tools faster, so the same shape takes longer and costs more.

  • Aluminum: fast cutting, low tool wear, short cycle time.
  • Mild steel and brass: moderate cutting speed.
  • Stainless steel and titanium: slow cutting, high tool wear, long cycle time.

That is why aluminum is the common choice for prototypes and structural parts. Our Torneamento CNC  and milling services both handle aluminum efficiently, and the right alloy keeps the hours low.

When does the hourly rate matter less than other costs?

On short runs, setup and programming matter more than the hourly rate. A one-off part can spend more time in setup than in cutting. On long runs, cycle time matters most, because every second repeats across hundreds of parts.

Finishing and inspection also add cost that no hourly rate shows. A part with tight tolerances needs extra checks, and a part with anodizing needs a coating step. Ask for the full price, not only the machine rate, so nothing surprises you after the order.

Shipping and duties matter too when you buy from overseas. Compare the delivered price, not just the price at the factory door.

Should you quote by the hour or by the part?

Most buyers do better with a fixed price per part. A per-part quote includes the shop’s estimate of time, so you know the cost before work starts. Hourly billing makes sense for custom, open-ended work, where the scope changes as the job goes on.

For production orders, ask for a price per part at several quantities. The price breaks show how setup cost drops as volume rises.

Perguntas frequentes

Q: What is the average CNC machining cost per hour?

A: It depends on the machine. Published 2026 guides list US 3-axis at about $35 to $60 per hour and 5-axis at about $100 to $200. Chinese ranges are lower. These are estimates, not quotes.

Q: Is 5-axis CNC machining more expensive per hour?

A: Yes, the hourly rate is higher. But a 5-axis machine can cut a complex part in one setup, which can lower the total price. Compare the total price per part, not only the rate.

Q: Does the hourly rate include setup and material?

A: Usually not. The rate covers machine time. Setup, programming, material, tooling, finishing, and inspection are separate lines. Ask each shop what its rate includes.

Q: Why is aluminum cheaper to machine than steel or titanium?

A: Aluminum cuts fast and wears tools slowly, so it needs fewer machine hours. Harder metals slow the cut and cost more in tooling. That is why aluminum parts are often the lowest-cost metal option.

Q: Does Elite Mold Tech charge by the hour?

A: We quote a price per part based on your drawing, not a public hourly rate. Send your files and we reply within 12 hours.

Q: How can I compare quotes from different shops?

A: Send the same package to each shop: the 3D file, 2D drawing, alloy, quantity, tolerance, and finish. Then compare the total price per part and the delivery terms, not the hourly rate.
